The Circle of Trust was created in Gordie Bailey’s honor to help peers educate peers about the dangers of alcohol; including binge drinking, alcohol poisoning, hazing, and their many side effects. These side effects include sexual assaults, violence, loss of self control, tolerance issues, assaults, criminal activity, as well as negative health and academic consequences. With unique events and giveaways, this program is about promoting healthy norms to other students.
The Circle of Trust isn’t about not drinking; it’s about pledging to take care of one another when you do choose to drink. The Circle of Trust is about the power students have to spread the message of responsible drinking, moderation, compassion for others and intolerance for hazing.
For the Texas A&M chapter, there are numerous ways to get involved depending on your level/area of interest and availability of time:
- Up to four students are needed to serve as Circle of Trust Coordinators. Coordinators will meet regularly to oversee and direct all COT programs, marketing and recruitment efforts and be advised by the Department of Greek Life staff. COT Coordinators will be the primary forces in getting Gordie’s message out to not just Greeks, but the entire campus community.
- Twice a year, the Gordie Foundation provides the A&M chapter with promotional materials to distribute on-campus. Volunteers will be needed to assist with this distribution across campus. Past promotional materials have included bottle openers, door hangers, koozies, bandanas, and wallet-size GORDIEcheck cards – all including the signs and symptoms of alcohol poisoning.
- The COT is a constantly expanding organization. There is no limit to the number of students can join. Volunteers are needed to spread the message in a variety of ways and to encourage students to sign up for the program.
- If you’re interested in being part of the chapter, but you aren’t quite sure what your involvement looks like, then that’s okay! We can put your name on your list, and you can determine how you’re involved once opportunities arise.
