The Greek Journey: A Leadership Academy

Journey to Opportunities and Understanding of Responsibility and Networking through an Evaluation of Yourself


The aim of The Greek Journey leadership academy is to unite emerging leaders from across the Greek community in order to offer opportunities and cultivate understanding of responsibility and networking through the evaluation of oneself. The leadership academy will attempt to develop a greater understanding of the foundations and responsibilities inherent in Greek Life. Participants will complete The Greek Journey by attending an orientation session, retreat, bi-monthly seminars, and social activities. Members will be selected by the chapter president and council advisor.

 

The academy will address self-management, interpersonal relationships, ethical decision making, critical analysis, organizational development, organization and planning, self-confidence, and multicultural competency through various methods ranging from lectures to completion of a ropes course.

 

The program will conclude in March with an induction ceremony and introduction to key university officials. The members of the Journey leadership academy will act as catalyst for change within the Greek community while enriching their personnel and professional lives.

Academy Goals

  • Improve relations among members of the Greek community
  • Increase positive visibility of emerging Greek leaders
  • Increase participant knowledge pertaining to various leadership skills and networking
  • Increase participant self-awareness

Academy Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the foundations and values of Greek organizations
  • Demonstrate integrity and competence in decision making
  • Articulate the relationship between Greek values and their personal lives
  • Identify methods of addressing organizational needs and expectations
  • Develop a vision for professional/personal growth congruent with one’s passions, values, and skills 
  • Develop interpersonal and intrapersonal competency
  • Synthesis the concept of humanitarianism

Program Overview

The Greek Journey developed by the Department of Greek Life to help emerging student leader’s gain the necessary tools to establish goals and create action plans that will enrich their Greek experience. The purpose of The Greek Journey is also to aid students in their transition from general membership to leadership roles in chapters and councils. Students will participate in a retreat, ropes course, experiential and service learning opportunity, and educational seminars and activities.

Participants & Staff

This program consists of selected students from Greek organizations not to exceed 75. The Department of Greek Life staff will coordinate the Journey leadership academy. The individual small groups will be lead by key university staff, faculty, and upper-class students deemed as "Team Guides".

Expectations of academy members 

  • Attend orientation session October 22, 2009 at 5:30 p.m.
  • Attend following meeting dates: November 5 and 19, December 3, January 28, February 11, and March 4
  • Attend Retreat Weekend Friday, February 26, 2010 to Saturday, February 27, 2010
  • Have a 2.25 cumulative G.P.R. to begin The Greek Journey and maintain a 2.25 each semester thereafter
  • Pay a $75.00 membership fee which will cover all food, supplies, t-shirt, and miscellaneous items
  • Comply with the Department of Greek Life Code of Ethics and The Student Code of Conduct and all rules applicable during membership in this program
  • Be engaged in all facets of the program
  • Adhere to a community of respect philosophy
